How to Choose a Car Cover
By Steve Mcqueen
Car covers are not all made equally. There are many things to think about when buying a car cover, but here are the three most important factors. 1. Custom versus semi-custom car cover Custom car covers are manufactured to order and designed to fit a particular vehicle perfectly. They cost more than semi-custom covers which are generally pre-manufactured and fit a class of vehicles based on size. A custom fit cover looks better, stays on your car better in windy conditions and moves around less, which is better for your paint finish. If none of these are important, a semi-custom cover will get you more cover for the money. 2. Weather conditions - indoors, outdoors, sun, rain, snow Indoor covers are specifically designed for indoor use only and will not do well outside. Some are made of high tech fabrics that look great on show cars. Outdoor fabrics can be used both indoors and outdoors. Some outdoor car covers are specifically designed for the hot sun and UV rays. Others do especially well in the rain or snow. The best, and most expensive, covers stand up to all weather conditions. Choose based on where your cover will be used. 2. Fabric - thickness, inner layers A thicker fabric protects better against dings and scratches. It will weigh more and is harder to handle. This can be a problem if you have a large SUV, for example. Lightweight fabrics are very easy to handle and great for everyday use. There are covers with a soft inner layer, good for paint. That extra layer adds to weight. Choose based on how you will use your cover. The right car cover depends on how you will be using your cover and your personal preferences. Understand the trade-offs first and you will find your way to the best car cover for your money. |
